Get ready for MTD

Making Tax Digital (MTD) represents the most significant reform of the UK tax filing system in decades.

From April 2026, self-employed individuals, sole traders and landlords with gross income exceeding £50,000 will be required to comply with MTD for Income Tax. From April 2027, the threshold reduces to those earning above £30,000, with further expansion expected in future years.

Under these rules:

r
  • Annual Self Assessment will be replaced with quarterly reporting
  • Taxpayers will make a minimum of five submissions per year
  • Digital recordkeeping will become mandatory
  • Returns can no longer be submitted directly through the traditional HMRC online portal
  • MTD-compatible software will be required

There is no avoiding the fact that this introduces additional reporting responsibilities.

However, with the right systems and professional support, the transition can be smooth and well-managed.

At Accounts House, we handle the entire MTD process for our clients — from digital setup and software integration to quarterly submissions and year-end declarations. Our aim is to remove the administrative burden while ensuring full compliance and better financial visibility.

MTD is changing the way tax works — and we ensure you stay ahead of it.

Are You Ready for MTD?

Quick Checklist

You may need to prepare for MTD if:

    • Your gross income from property and/or self-employment exceeds £30,000
    • You currently rely on paper records or spreadsheets
    • You only review your accounts once per year
    • You are unsure whether your software is HMRC-compliant
    • You want to reduce the risk of penalties
    • You would prefer quarterly oversight instead of year-end surprises

If you have ticked one or more of the above, now is the right time to act.

At Accounts House, we make the transition simple, structured and stress-free.

Will I Still Be Able to Submit My Self Assessment Tax Return Directly to HMRC?

Under the current Self Assessment system, taxpayers can log in to the HMRC website and submit their tax return manually.

However, under Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax, this will no longer be possible.

Once you are within the MTD regime, submissions must be made using HMRC-approved compatible software. Direct filing through the traditional HMRC online portal will no longer be available for those mandated into MTD.

You will therefore need to either:

    • Use approved MTD-compatible software yourself, or
    • Appoint an accountant to manage the process on your behalf

In addition, manual recordkeeping will no longer meet HMRC requirements. Income and expenses must be recorded digitally, maintained in compatible software, and submitted in the format specified by HMRC.

While this represents a significant shift from the current system, with the right structure and support in place, the process becomes routine and manageable.

At Accounts House, we ensure your records, software and submissions are fully compliantremoving complexity and giving you confidence that everything is handled correctly.
